Cravendale has waved goodbye to the cats with thumbs, replacing them with Barry The Biscuit Boy. Barry appears in the milk brand’s new spot by Wieden + Kennedy London, which takes the form of a classic children’s fable, complete with a dark twist…

W+K worked with Blink Ink directors Andrew Thomas Huang and Joseph Mann to create Barry and his world, which is a mix of puppetry, stop motion animation and CG. The character is quite a sharp change in direction for the brand, who had enjoyed great success with its original Cats With Thumbs spot in 2011. As many other brands have since jumped on the CGI cat bandwagon though, the time seems ripe for a new approach.

UPDATE: For those of you interested in how the ad was made, production company Blink Ink has released a video showing the process, which you can watch here. The spot was shot over three weeks using 16 live action and three stop motion puppets which were cast in silicone, painted and fitted with animatronic eyes…
