Creative Leaders 50: Innovation in education

CR has just released its Creative Leaders 50 list, celebrating those we believe are driving change through creativity. Here we highlight those who are transforming how we think of education

Creative education is in the middle of significant change. While the traditional art schools are still providing a successful route into the creative industries, new short courses are also appearing with increasing regularity, often targeted at those who may be some way into their creative career but feel in need of an extra educational boost.

And we are also seeing charities and non-profits using creativity as a way to offer new opportunities to those who may previously have felt excluded from the creative industries.

As part of this year’s Creative Leaders 50 list, created by CR in partnership with Workfront, we have highlighted a number of individuals and companies who are using creative thinking in education to help change people’s lives or offer new opportunities to those already established in the creative sector. Isabel Farchy, Founder of Creative Mentor Network The Creative Mentor Network is a charity with a mission to make the creative industries more diverse and inclusive through mentoring. CMN trains creative industry professionals as mentors, and connects them with diverse young talent.

Anisah Osman Britton, Founder of 23 Code Street Osman Britton founded 23 Code Street in January 2016. It’s a coding school exclusively for women founded with a mission to bring more women into the tech industry. The fee structure at 23 Code Street is designed such that every paying student here in the UK funds the technical education of a girl in the slums of Mumbai.

Marice Cumber, Project Director and Founder of Accumulate For most of her career Marice Cumber has worked in arts education, with the belief that creative expression has the power to alleviate life’s problems. Some five years ago she founded charity Accumulate to help better the lives of London’s young homeless people. The charity conducts a range of free creative workshops for those living in the city’s hostels and homeless shelters.

Perri Lewis, Co-founder, Chief Product Officer at Mastered Mastered offers high-quality online and one-to-one learning experiences for fashion professionals, devised in collaboration with some of the industry’s most respected people – from Nick Knight to Inez and Vinoodh and Fabien Baron. Since 2015, more than 4,400 creatives from 95 different countries have enrolled in a Mastered programme.
