Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett have worked together as Gorillaz since 1998. In that time the duo has released five studio albums and developed a persona as a ‘virtual band’, fronted by a series of cartoon characters drawn and animated by Hewlett. This unusual format has allowed Albarn and Hewlett to experiment both musically and visually. In addition to Gorillaz, Albarn and Hewlett also collaborated on the opera Monkey: Journey to the West, which premiered at the Manchester International Festival in 2007. They are of course also renowned for their individual creative projects, which include Blur and The Good, the Bad & the Queen for Albarn, and Tank Girl for Hewlett.
