In 2014, Jim Sutherland left hat-trick, the design studio he had set up with Gareth Howat and David Kimpton some 13 years previously. The plan was to take a sabbatical and then set up on his own. Four years on and Studio Sutherl& has become one of the most-awarded studios in the UK. The ‘studio’ actually consists of Sutherland and one assistant, working out of a room in his house in Kennington in South London. Despite such modest set-up, the studio numbers Start-Rite shoes, Agatha Christie Ltd and the Royal Mail among its clients. Sutherland is a visiting Professor in Design at Norwich University of the Arts, and has given lectures at many UK universities. He was on the D&AD Executive board from 2009 to 2012 and a governor at Norwich School of Art between 2010 and 2014. He is also on the board of The Typographic Circle.
