Papermaking, in some form, has been going on in the picturesque setting of Burneside, Cumbria, since the 18th century. In 1845 James Cropper established a mill there which today is overseen by his great, great, great grandson Mark. Cropper combines his role as chair of James Cropper paper with an interest in sustainable energy (he is a partner at Turquoise, a merchant bank specialising in energy and the environment as well as owner of Ellergreen, a hydro-electric power specialist). James Cropper is one of the UK’s most innovative paper companies, supplying many luxury brands and also pioneering the recycling of coffee cup waste.
