Creativity Sucks! has been running since 2022, and aims to get stuck into some of the thornier questions about working in advertising and design, as well as looking at the latest trends and new ideas. In the past we have tackled serious topics such as ageism and salaries, as well as the arrival of AI and the metaverse.

The opening episode of the latest series takes a look at the recent return of humour to advertising. Host and CR editor Eliza Williams is joined by three guests – Lynsey Atkin, ECD at 4creative, Channel 4’s in-house agency; Hunter Ellenbarger, founder of the content studio Star Quality and former creative lead for YouTube’s social team; and Rob Doubal, CCO at McCann UK.

They take a look at why brands are abandoning purpose for comedy, and how they can use humour well to engage and entertain audiences. Along the way they discuss ads from Skittles, Snickers, Duolingo, Channel 4 and more, as well as exploring the influence of Tarrant on TV on UK advertising.

You can listen to the episode below, or wherever you get your podcasts, and can also revisit all the previous episodes of Creativity Sucks! here.
