Crispin Porter + Bogusky: Reality Coalition ad

It might come as a surprise to discover that this ad for the Reality Coalition – an organisation that aims to highlight the pollution caused by the burning of coal – has been directed by Joel & Ethan Coen, who are better known for film rather than ad work

The commercial has all the hallmarks of a Crispin, Porter + Bogusky spot, however, with its irreverent take on a serious subject. This makes it refreshing in the arena of environmental advertising – instead of a po-faced voiceover expressing the dangers we face, the spot shows a family merrily spraying their house with coal smoke as if it is air freshener. A spoof product pitchman then appears asking “Is regular clean, clean enough for your family? Not when you can have Clean Coal Clean!” As the foul spray fills the room, the family are reduced to coughing and spluttering before the end slate appears with the statement “In reality, there is no such thing as clean coal”, and provides a link to the Reality Coalition website,
