D&AD New Blood: Global

We’re picking our favourites from entries to this year’s D&AD New Blood Awards. We will be choosing four projects from each of the themes identified by D&AD in this year’s entries. In this post, we are looking at work with a global perspective

D&AD’s New Blood Awards celebrate the best in student creativity. Each year, students from around the world respond to briefs set by a cross-section of brands, charities and other organisations.

This year’s winners will be announced on July 7 but ahead of the ceremony, we have picked out some of our favourites, gathering them under a series of themes that have come out of the work submitted. In this post we are looking at some of the best work from outside the UK.

50% of New Blood entries come from outside the UK. Top winning regions include: USA, Spain, Singapore, Germany, Taiwan and Russia. With such an international spread, New Blood becomes a diverse reflection of creative culture, providing a snapshot of talent and trends worldwide.

Ink Brothers for Amnesty International/WPP

All over the world, indigenous tribes are disappearing along with their unique cultures. This fascinating idea for Amnesty is intended to raise both awareness and funds in order to preserve links to these fragile communities. In many, tattoos are a way of welcoming new members. To link people to this cultural heritage, they will be able to be remotely tattooed by tribe members through motion capturing tablets and robotic arms. In this way, a personal bond is created and the tribe’s unique culture lives on under the skin of supporters and the diaspora.

YouTube Stock Exchange for Nationwide

This project asks: ‘How do you reinvent the banking system for a generation that is disengaged with its investments and savings habits?’ The idea is that Nationwide, in collaboration with YouTube, tackles three related problems: educating the youth about their financial futures and the importance of saving and growing their money, the lack of financial resources for content creators on YouTube, and getting the viewer more invested into the video creation process. Nationwide’s YouTube Stock Exchange would allow users to ‘invest’ in content creators’ channels on YouTube. Each creator receives a share value based on the previous performance of their videos.

Retro Serif for Monotype

Retro Serif is a project about the revival of glyphs in the Russian alphabet that had been omitted after the revolution. When the Bolsheviks came to power, says student Polina Hohonova, the letters I, Ѳ, Ѣ were omitted from the ‘new’ Russian alphabet as they were regarded as symbols of the aristocratic ‘High Russian’ and therefore representative of the defunct Tsarist Russia. Those symbols were part of the language of Pushkin and Tolstoy. “Reviving these characters is a protest against the prescribed dictatorship of the language,” she says.

Ford Mentor for Ford

Lagos’s roads are amongst the most deadly in the world – many taxi drivers have little or no training before getting behind the wheel. Ford Mentor is a comparison app where drivers are ranked according to how safe they are. Drivers must prove they have a licence before the app will accept them. As they use the app, it provides tips on how to drive more safely so that drivers can learn as they go.
