Design a Gateway to Petworth

The Sussex town has launched a design competition to create a welcome to the town for visitors

Like many towns in the UK, Petworth, which sits within the South Downs National Park, has been working hard to bring in visitors and sustain its high street. This new initiative is part of an overall ‘Petworth Vision’ aimed at shaping the town’s future.

As a first step, the town wishes to change visitors’ perceptions as they first enter the town centre. Most come by car and end up walking into town from its main car park. The Gateway project hopes to turn this into an attractive welcoming and informative experience.

The solution, the project’s organisers say, does not have to be a literal gateway but could instead involve general improvements to the environment.

The organisers are asking designers to register their interest by emailing petworthvision@gmail.com by 5.30pm on May 16. A brief will then be sent out to all those registered. In response, the organisers are asking for portfolios to be submitted along with a 500 word statement on the intended approach. Two shortlisted entrants will then be asked to present their idea in September, for which they will be paid a fee.
