Based at Yorkshire Artspace in Sheffield, Made North gallery will present work by established and emerging designer/makers for exhibition and sale
The gallery, which is a Culture North project, has a mission to provide a platform that encourages and promotes contemporary design and craft in the north of England. Gallery curator and director of Culture North Patrick Murphy says: “The need for a gallery that promotes the north and its designer/makers is essential in today’s culture. A sense of place and provenance is becoming increasingly important in a world fast losing regional individuality in the face of globalisation. Instead of each city or region looking the same we want to celebrate difference; instead of high volume and low costs using oversees manufacturing, we want to see a return to responsible ‘local’ manufacturing and fair pricing that rewards the design/makers, encourages innovation and ideas and in turn supports the northern economy.”

Made North opens with exhibitions from Manchester-based Lazerian, the centrepiece of which is a 3 metre wide carbon fibre chandelier (shown above) and Daniel Schofield, a recent graduate from Sheffield.
Planned subjects of graphic design exhibitions include Ian Anderson/The Designers Republic and Anthony Burrill. Made North will also be curating Northern Revolutions showing 50 of the all time best record sleeves from either northern bands or northern designers.
