Easter Heads by Charlie Kwai
Honourable Mention: Personal

Charlie Kwai’s close-up photographs of people buried in sand are intriguing and artistic. They may appear to be scenes constructed by the photographer for their unusual effect, but in fact are documented moments that are rooted in practicality. Shot on the beaches of Accra in Ghana on Easter Monday, the images show people seeking refuge from the intense heat and salty air by burying themselves neck deep in the sand for hours at a time.
