The CR Photography Annual 2014: A documentary series on Lloyd Aereo Boliviano (also known as LAB Airlines) by Nick Ballon, as chosen by Gemma Fletcher, Getty Images

Every time I return to these pictures, something new is revealed. The multi-layered narrative of the project plays with the paradox of loss and optimism.

Each image is its own unique tragedy, captured with a delicate use of colour and light bringing hope and beauty to the struggles of the people and places that make up Lloyd Aéreo Boliviano.

The surreal portraits of employees, torn between their past, present and imagined future have a quiet beauty, both haunting and captivating.
