Fat Activists by Alice Zoo

Honourable Mention: Personal

This series documents acceptance activists based in the UK; all are people who are advocating for fair treatment and equality of opportunity for fat people. While the majority of the UK’s population – 62% – is classified as overweight or obese, fatness is highly stigmatised, with fat people experiencing rejection or insults, as well as job and healthcare discrimination.

Media coverage of fatness is also often negative, despite studies demonstrating that weight stigma itself is a main cause of poor health outcomes and weight gain. In this series, Alice Zoo aims to look beyond the stats and create portraits that centre on the activists’ stories and life experiences.
