A new platform delves into Frank Gehry’s architecture

Getty’s digital experience about the Walt Disney Concert Hall boasts the kind of bold, spirited approach befitting of the legendary music venue

Designed by renowned American architect Frank Gehry, the Walt Disney Concert Hall has become an iconic landmark in LA. Beyond its striking exterior, the building was also built to be one of the most acoustically sophisticated concert halls in the world.

A new digital exhibition by Getty, made in collaboration with the LA Philharmonic and Frank Gehry himself, reveals in detail the thinking and design process behind this world-famous piece of architecture.

Named Sculpting Harmony, the immersive website, which was developed by the Amsterdam arm of digital experience agency Resn, allows visitors to peruse elements of the hall’s planning through interviews, archival materials, 3D graphics, and stunning aerial photography.

The website boasts a playful, engaging tone, encouraging users to interact with the content and embrace the creative spirit involved in not just architecture, but the making of beautiful music as well.

The landing page greets visitors with a giant, rounded display typeface used for the exhibition’s title, while intricate hand-drawn lines reflect the dramatic shape of the building and the expressive sounds found within. As an Easter egg of sorts, desktop users can also unlock a ‘maestro cursor’ by clicking and holding their mouse and moving it around the screen.

“We aimed to infuse Frank Gehry’s authentic style and trademark sketches into the art direction, striking a balance between a vibrant celebration of the concert hall and an elegant, editorial approach for a scholarly audience,” the Resn team explained on its website. “We also pushed the limits of typography to express the concert hall’s distinctive shapes, diverse orchestral sounds, and Gehry’s playful personality.”

As visitors scroll through the website, they are presented with an immersive mix of imagery, video, and text. Renderings of Gehry’s architectural models sit alongside new interviews with the architect and amazing bird’s-eye views of the hall to provide a truly detailed account of its creation.

Through doing so, not only can visitors gain a deeper appreciation for one of Los Angeles’ most beloved buildings, but they can also peek into the creative process of a true master.
