FWA, the website that champions the best new creative projects online, has announced its Site of the Year for 2014. The winner is Guy Cotten, the French marine clothing and safety equipment brand, which created a terrifying web experience to raise awareness of the importance of wearing a life jacket…

We are used to safety messages about life jackets but most of them unfortunatley glide over our heads. Perhaps aware of this, Guy Cotten created Sortie en Mer (which can be experienced in full here, trailer shown below), which tasks viewers to keep a character who falls overboard alive by scrolling down the screen – this might seem a simple task, but it quickly becomes fatally tiring. The site was created by CLM BBDO and features shockingly realistic film footage created by director Ben Strebel through Wanda Productions.

Alongside the Site of the Year Award, which is judged by industry folks, FWA also has a People’s Choice Award, which for 2014 went to Five Minutes, a zombie game-cum-branded website (still below) created by Maximilian Niemann, a student at Germany’s Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg
, and Unit9 for G-Shock. Our original write-up on the piece can be seen here, and the full site can be experienced here.
