In the run-up to the Olympics and Paralympics 2020, held in the summer of 2021, Harper’s Bazaar commissioned former photo director (now contributing photographer) Rachel Louise Brown to photograph some of the female ­athletes headed to Tokyo.

Most sports were in quarantine at the time, but Brown was able to secure access to two-time Olympic medallist Bryony Page (trampoline), Kate Shortman and Izzy Thorpe (aesthetic swimming), and several of the women’s Paralympic basketball team. With Covid safety in mind, Brown worked with the athletes from a distance.
