Harry Butt on why the future is in motion

Butt has given up his independent practice to join the newly launched Nexus Design Studio, which will bring a focus on motion design to the award-winning animation company

Harry Butt built up a formidable roster of clients at his independent company Butt Studio, which opened in 2018, including creating work for adidas, Boiler Room, Chloé, Instagram, Nike, as well as musicians such as Tame Impala and Dua Lipa.

His output is diverse, crossing design, illustration, animation, and motion graphics though it is the story at the heart of the work that matters most to him. “I don’t see these as distinct things, or even that wide of a practice,” he tells CR. “Over the years the classic transition happened where you care less about the technical execution and more about the idea.”

This makes him a natural fit for his new role as creative director of Nexus Design Studio, a new division of London-based animation and film company Nexus Studios. Butt is tasked with growing its motion design capabilities, and will produce “disruptive, design-first” campaigns for brands.
