Heatwave offers a contemporary take on an enduring theme in photography: the British in summer. Photographed over the summer of 2019, when Brexit continued to dominate the news headlines in the UK, Charlie Kwai aimed to capture a portrait of British identity today.

According to the photo­grapher, the series offers a snapshot of “our unified love of the Great British Summertime all over the United Kingdom – from Swansea to Sunderland and Southend to Blackpool – all to investigate what it means to be British in 2019”.
