It’s a wrap for director Thomas Hicks

Gravenhurst’s Nightwatchman’s Blues / Farewell, Farewell – limited edition (1300 only) double A-side, double 7″ pack, in handprinted, numbered, fold-out poster created by Thomas Hicks
CR readers may recognise the name of director Thomas Hicks – he was one of our second Warp Records competition winners (CR June 2005) in which he won the opportunity to direct a film to a track by Gravenhurst entitled I Turn My Face To The Forest Floor. Now, three years later, it gives us an enormous sense of well being to hear that he’s still working with Gravenhurst – and to see this, their latest collaboration…

Hicks has recently completed a new stopframe animated promo for Gravenhurst track Nightwatchman’s Blues – one of four songs that appear on a just-released limited edition seven inch single which comes packaged in a unique, numbered, hand printed foldout poster sleeve – also created by Hicks (shown above).

In fact, each of the 1300 limited edition poster sleeves displays the handprinted artwork of one frame of the promo. “I made a series of hand block prints,” explains Hicks,” each one would be folded to make a sleeve for one of the 1300 limited singles.

“This series was designed to animate,” Hicks continues, “so when the 1300 frames were photographed and run in sequnce it is very simple animation to make a promo.”

Bobby’s Burger Palace

Pentagram’s new identity for Bobby’s Burger Palace in Lake Grove, Long Island.
Conveniently, each word in the name has six letters: sandwich them together and,
rather nicely, you get two buns, a burger (and some lettuce)
Burgers. They’ve been getting a bit of a bad press recently. So it’s nice to see a design studio having a decent pop at designing an identity for a range of burger restaurants, which, these days, could be thought of as a potentially healthy-eating (ahem) hot potato. But Pentagram has firmly grasped the buns here, so to speak, with its bright and bold identity work for celebrity chef Bobby Flay’s Burger Palace. To us it’s indicative of the time when chomping responsibly on the odd burger was supposed to be fun. Well at Bobby’s it clearly is, and Pentagram look to have made the experience a little more enjoyable…

BMX mounted soundsystems: Made In Queens

Made In Queens is a short film that lifts the lid on an underground scene emerging in the outskirts of New York’s Queens borough. Directed by Nicolas Randall and Joe Stevens, the film looks at a small crew of Trinidadian teenagers, led by Nick Ragbir, who are obsessed with customising their bmx bikes with the fattest soundsystems they can possibly hook them up with…
