Launching tonight on UK TV is a new brand commercial for ITV drama that mixes some of today’s stars with familiar faces from years gone by….

The film, shown above, is set in a house and shows stars from current hit dramas including Downtown Abbey, Whitechapel, and Doc Martin joined by some favourites from the past including Inspector Morse, Brideshead Revisited and Poirot.

The campaign was created in-house at the channel by ITV Creative, and directed by Siri Bunford. It features new footage shot especially for the spot mixed with archive film, and what sets the finished work apart is just how seamless the joins between old and new are.

“We went back to the ITV archive and rescanned the original 16mm negative from Poirot, Brideshead Revisited, Prime Suspect and Inspector Morse,” explains creative director Tony Pipes. “We then regraded and cleaned up the negative to match as closely as possible to the newly shot footage, which was shot on 35mm film.

“From the negative, we selected various shots where we could then match our body doubles to particular scenes and structure our camera moves and filming to also match,” he continues. “We had to be mindful of camera angles and tracking, as well as lighting being of utmost importance, as our set lighting had to match seamlessly to the existing archive.

“For DCI Tennison, we completely rotascoped her full body from the archive, treated each frame and composited her into the scene. We filmed with all the other ITV talent across a five-day shoot in Langleybury Mansion near Leavesden Studios.”
