We kick off proceedings with an intense little number for De Staat’s track Witch Doctor, directed by Studio Smack, Floris Kaayk and Torre Florim.
Next, is a beautiful, highly stylised film for The Yabba by Battles, directed by Roger Guàrdia. The production company is Canada.
This video for Club Cheval’s Discipline opens in a classic house party, though things get really fun when it becomes apparent that there is a house-wide game of musical chairs taking place. Directors: J.A.C.K; Production company: Wanda Paris.
The Libertines go dark in this video for Heart of the Matter, which is set at a peep show and sees a group of onlookers watch as the band attack themselves with weapons and drugs. A clever muse on the voyeurism and self-destruction that follows the band around. Director: Roger Sargent; Production company: Burning Reel.
Director Kévin Bray has created a trippy, possibly nausea-inducing video for Gwilym Gold’s track Greener World, which features some nice use of 3D-scanned visuals.
This absorbing promo for Breathe by Sheep, Dog & Wolf features a series of vignettes focused on characters in intense (if fairly everyday) situations, from riding in the back of a fast-moving vehicle to holding their breath underwater. It’s beautifully shot by directing duo Thunderlips. Production company: Candlelit Pictures.
Another abstract piece now, for Django Django’s Pause Repeat, which features some lovely visuals from directors Daniel Brereton and James Dixon. Production company: Wanda.
We’ve seen gifs utilised in music videos before, though rarely as entertainingly as in this video for The Shoes’ Drifted from director Dent De Cuir. Production company: Caviar Paris.
Everybody loses their legs in this post-heavy promo from Los Pérez for Gone by Jr Jr. Production company: Little Minx/grayskull.
We’ve saved the most epic for last, with this glorious all singing-all dancing number from Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for the track Downtown. The duo have directed the promo alongside Jason Koenig, and three production companies – M&RL Films, Vision Film Co and NxNW – have come together to pull it off. Some videos you just want to be in, and this is one of them.
