The road to the 2014 World Cup will no doubt be paved with ads, with Nike Brazil releasing one of the first this weekend, an epic spot directed by Daniel Kleinman titled Dare To Be Brazilian…

The ad, by Wieden + Kennedy São Paulo, sees players from the Brazilian footie team doing their thing. As they play, the camera focuses in on individual players and shows what they are thinking – these scenes are then played out in various styles, including one animated sequence.

There are echoes of Nike’s massively successful 2010 World Cup ad Write The Future in the way the camera goes into the players’ minds – though whereas that spot featured superstar players from all over the world, this ad is focused solely on the Brazilian team. Write The Future did lead to accusations of a ‘Nike curse‘ however, after many of the players featured in it underperformed (or didn’t perform at all) at the 2010 event. But of course that’s all just silly superstition isn’t it…

Having written about Everton’s decision to rebrand on the CR blog, writes Craig Oldham, I tempted fate in seeking private solace in my beloved Barnsley FC seemingly being set on the town’s coat of arms as their crest (opinions on that one aside). But I was way off – the club is next in line for a public vote ‘brand refresh’

Enduring Properties

A new documentary on the life and work of the legendary John Webster reminds us of his great skill in creating loveable advertising ‘properties’. And while they may not be the coolest aspect of modern communications, great characters can still be extremely valuable to brands
