Nubian Jak Community Trust: Black Plaque Project

Category: Integrated Advertising; Entered by: Havas London

London’s famous blue plaques have served as a tribute to Britain’s notable men and women for over 150 years, yet only 1.6% of those honoured are of African or Caribbean descent. Ignored or discriminated against during their lifetime, many historically significant Black individuals continue to be excluded posthumously. Their names and the contributions they made to society are at risk of being forgotten.

The Black Plaque Project, an initiative from the Nubian Jak Community Trust, aims to champion these forgotten heroes, in the hope that they will eventually be acknowledged permanently, and their black plaques changed to blue.

The project launched at the end of 2020, and 30 individuals will be honoured with black plaques over the following 12 months. Their amazing stories have also been curated on an immersive digital platform and are supported with an outdoor poster and long copy press campaign. The billboards feature interactive QR codes which reveal each individual’s full story, and the project is also backed by a programme of social and digital activity, including a series of podcasts featuring a host of influential Black cultural commentators.
