Illustrator Ono-Chan on creating original work

Alongside pop culture references, the Japan-based illustrator draws inspiration from a range of sources and creatives to create satirical images that feel uniquely personal

“I love humour. It’s important to me that my pictures make me giggle,” Japan-based illustrator Ono-Chan tells CR. “When I am in a tense situation, I have always had the habit of wanting to change the atmosphere towards humour. That is what I want to do with my paintings.”

Having previously been a graphic designer, Ono-Chan decided to pursue illustration as a full-time career when a friend, who was also working as an illustrator, opened her eyes to the possibilities. After retraining, illustration appealed because of its wide-ranging reach in entertaining people.
