Bringing OpenAI’s brand into the mainstream

We hear how design agency Area 17 helped transform the company behind Dall-E and ChatGPT from a niche non-profit into one of the world’s most famous AI brands

While AI has been gradually pervading our lives for years now, it’s only entered mainstream consciousness more recently. One business that has emerged as a key player in the technology’s mass proliferation so far is OpenAI; the company is offering a glimpse at how humankind may live and work alongside AI in the future, thanks to its hugely popular image and text generator tools, Dall-E and ChatGPT.

At the beginning of this year, just a couple of months after its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT reached 100 million active monthly users – an even faster rate of adoption than social media giants such as Instagram, which took two and a half years to reach the same point, and TikTok, which took nine months. Following its transition to a for-profit company in 2019, OpenAI’s estimated value has increased to a staggering $29 billion, and counting.
