Personal: Sorry I Gave Birth I Disappeared But Now I’m Back

“I love being a mother. I also loved being an artist,” says Andi Galdi Vinko, who grapples with the tension between the two in Sorry I Gave Birth I Disappeared But Now I’m Back. The series features frank images of pregnant and breastfeeding women’s bodies, as well as the day-to-day experience of motherhood.

Vinko describes the images as a constant work in progress, saying they’re about “becoming, understanding, and remembering”. “When I realised I was pregnant, I had no idea what awaited me,” she explains. “How messy and how raw, how unpredictable and how out of control motherhood really was compared to the images I had in my mind from films, photos, and paintings done by men.”

The series is collected together in a book of the same name, published by Trolley Books.
