Weekly German newspaper supplement SZ Magazin has a track record of publishing abstract and playful imagery. Its recent fashion issue was no exception, as it asked 14 photographers to shoot older figures who have helped to guide them through their own lives.

One of the most striking contributions, which became a cover for the issue, was from Charlie Engman. The photographer has been making offbeat images of his mother in a range of guises for fashion shoots, magazine editorials and runways for over a decade, culminating in his 2020 monograph, Mom. “When I was asked to participate in the issue, it was a no-brainer to photograph my mother,” says Engman.
