In Genesis, Guatemala City-based photographer Juan Brenner explores how young people living in the Guatemalan Highlands are developing a “new set of cultural assets imbued with their local traditions, along with more global narratives and aesthetics”.

According to Brenner, this is the first generation to establish a dialogue with their contemporaries around the world, which has given rise to a fresh feeling of energy, and a compelling mix of consumer culture and traditional ways. Brenner, who returned to his home country after ten years in New York, says: “There is a vitality that springs from the territory itself, along with a splendour that always belonged to this group – an energetic force – indelible and intense, gradually regaining traction after a blurry reality instilled during colonial times.”
