Maya Golyshkina’s self-portrait, Sad Clown, is the result of a “failed collaboration” with MM6, the contemporary fashion line belonging to luxury house Maison Margiela.

In the image, Golyshkina adopts the persona of an artist reimagined as a sad clown. The environment around her is constructed largely out of paper, including a drawing of a balloon tied to a string, which is positioned as though she is holding it. Surrounded by art materials and wearing an exasperated expression, the image reflects Golyshkina’s state of mind when she is in the process of creating and offers a wry look at the artist’s studio.
