Grange Farm Estate in south Harrow was on the brink of demolition when a group of the estate’s youngest residents went in search of a way to immortalise their at-risk community. Local charity My Yard was already running a number of schemes in the area, but its Changemakers initiative – a self-initiated project that saw the estate host circus acts and food markets, among other things – marked the big turning point.
The idea to make a book to remember Grange Farm Estate evolved from a series of youth events with artists including Jackson Bowley and Henry Gorse. Shot entirely by a group of children aged 10 to 15 using disposable cameras, the images are a joyful anthology of a community that flourished in non-secure housing.
