Richard Mosse

Irish-born, New York-based photographer Richard Mosse’s work, Broken Spectre, initially took the form of an immersive 74-minute film that uses numerous different photographic techniques to document the destruction of the Amazon Basin and the environmental crimes committed there and in related ecosystems. Described as Mosse’s most ambitious work to date, the film is said to shift “between a manifold of ecological narratives, from the topographic to the anthropocentric, and to a careful examination of non-human violence and survival”.

The film’s accompanying photographic works use experimental documentary techniques such as multispectral cameras that emulate satellite imaging technology, ultraviolet botanical studies, and heat-sensitive analogue film “warped, mottled and degraded by the oppressive environment and by the burning forest itself”.
