Historically, there’s been a pervasive stereotype of cheerleaders as women who perform exclusively for male sports and men. It’s a cliché that completely bypasses their own athleticism and ambitions, and this is what Sophia Wilson sought to redress in her campaign for Google Pixel.

The powerful image of the Brooklyn Dymondz cheer team in action refocuses the spotlight firmly on their sporting prowess. “The reason I got into photography initially was because I didn’t see enough kids that looked like me in magazines and ads – so I’m super happy to aid in making a change and spreading a lil’ Black joy,” says the photographer.
