Thandiwe Muriu

Personal: Camo

Thandiwe Muriu describes her Camo series as “a little bit of a personal reflection on how I felt I can disappear into the background of my culture”, with the photographs a tribute to her love of glossy fashion photography as well as her African heritage.

The images feature models dressed in brightly coloured and patterned fabric that both blends in and stands out against a background of the same – helped out by some striking hairstyles and eyewear.

Muriu, who is a self-taught photographer, says her career has been challenging at times, particularly in her home country of Kenya, where the photography scene is dominated by men. Camo, then, is perhaps a retort to this sense of feeling “dismissed”. “I had to learn to be brave and bold and say: ‘I’m in charge,’” she says.
