Sarah Maple

Personal: Labour of Love

After having her baby, Sussex-based artist Sarah Maple logged every feed and nappy change, and how long each took, and says she was “astounded at the sheer amount of hours we’re putting into the thankless (as far as society is concerned) task of being a parent”.

This data formed the basis for Labour of Love – hundreds of images of Maple and her baby, overlaid with collage, stitching, charcoal, and other handmade elements.

The series covered the walls of a room-sized installation at the Art Rotterdam fair, accompanied by a live performance of Maple writing the feed number onto each piece. The aim, she says, is to show “the volume of work that is expected of mothers, and to challenge people to rethink the value of the time spent”.
