Plectra selecta

Far from just a triangular piece of plastic, guitar picks are designed in a range of sizes and shapes to match all manner of playing styles, as photographer Luke Kirwan reveals

Whether it’s a plectrum, a pick or a plec, the exact shape and thickness of a guitarist’s chosen piece of polyoxymethylene is a matter of personal preference.

Many musicians favour the more flexible models, from around the 0.50mm to 0.73mm gauge, while Slash, we’re told, likes his on the heavy side, at a hefty 1.14mm (very nearly the terrain of the bass players). We asked the photographer Luke Kirwan to shoot a selection for us.

Kirwan is represented by Blunt London. See bluntlondon.com. More of Kirwan’s work is at lukekirwan.co.uk.

The plectra featured were kindly donated by Hanks guitar shop of Denmark Street in London. More at hanksguitarshop.com
