Record sleeves of the month

Following on from the Special Edition feature in our current, music-themed January 2012 issue of CR, here are some recent releases that demonstrate that the physical music product is still alive and kicking…

Following on from the Special Edition feature in the current, music-themed January 2012 issue of Creative Review, here are some recently produced sleeves that demonstrate that despite rapidly declining sales of physical music product, there are still artists, designers and packaging experts determined to create beautiful, collectible releases….

Martin Kvamme of Snøhetta Design in Oslo has worked on two beautiful music releases recently and this one (above)  is the nature-inspired packaging for Mike Patton’s film score for Saverio Costanzo’s film adaption of La Solitudine Dei Numberi Primi (The Solitude of Prime Numbers) by novelist Paolo Giordano.

“The rose leaf is printed CMYK on both sides,” explains Kvamme of the package. “The front has a UV gloss coating and every single vein of the leaf has been blind embossed to give its surface a nice texture. The songs are numbered as prime numbers, 2, 3, 5, 7, 11 etc and are programmed this way when you play the CD.”

Also designed by Kvamme is this beautiful white limtited edition boxed version of the latest album by Norweigen musician Magnet, entitled Ferrofluid.

“Ferrofluid is a liquid which becomes strongly magnetized in the presence of a magnetic field – but also the title of Even “Magnet” Johansen’s 5th album,” explains Kvamme. This Snøhetta-designed version is an exclusive limited edition version of the album. The box is vacuum formed and numbered in 500 editions, with only 300 of them released for sale. Included in the box is a special ticket to be redeemed for use at a Magnet concert of choice in Norway by the end of 2012. The ticket also includes a meet and greet with the artist before the concert.

The Vinyl Factory recently released 500 hand numbered copies of Florence & The Machine track Shake It Out (the only physical release of the track) which contains the remix by The Weekend on the flipside. It is the first of a series of limited edition Florence vinyl releases from The Vinyl Factory and, they tell us, “each cover will showcase the creative collaboration between Florence Welch and Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfield who personally chose Florence as his muse for next season’s collection.”

This cover has been screenprinted, silver foiled and hand numbered on pristine white card and features a photograph of Welch by Lagerfield. The white vinyl disc is housed in a silver card inner sleeve.

And last but not least is the gatefold, double vinyl release of Tycho’s new album, Dive, released on Ghostly International last month. Printed on matt card the landscapes featured in the artwork have an extra-terrestrial feel. As well as producing the music, Tycho (aka Scott Hansen) also designed the sleeve of the record.
