Deep: Royal Hospital Chelsea, 6 June 1944, D-Day 75 publication

Honourable Mention: Design, Print

D-Day was one of the most significant battles fought on European shores. To mark the 75th anniversary of the Normandy Landings, the Royal Hospital Chelsea invited Deep to produce a commemorative publication to distribute to attendees at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2019.

The publication featured photographs of four D-Day veterans – Ernie, Bill, George, and Frank – alongside evocative interviews in which they share their personal memories of what was the largest seaborne invasion in history.

A large format for the publication was chosen, printed minimally in black and metallic gold on uncoated paper. Block printing techniques were used to evoke the vintage, handmade processes of the 1940s, and to create a striking typographic style. The document was bound and hand-finished using three-hole stitching in ‘Chelsea Pensioner’ scarlet.

The publication forms part of a larger rebrand and strategy by Deep and the in-house marketing team at Royal Hospital Chelsea to shift the brand away from the ‘institution’ and onto championing the Chelsea Pensioners themselves.
