Royal Mail: Pride stamps

Category: Print; Entrant: NB Studio

Royal Mail invited NB Studio to develop a set of eight special release stamps and a suite of collectibles to mark the 50th anniversary of the UK’s first Pride march, held in London on 1 July 1972.

NB Studio came up with A March Through Time, which pays tribute to each decade of Pride since that first “carnival parade” of protest in the summer of 72. The panoramic format reinforces the timeline concept, creating a tapestry of movement, thanks to the vivid full-bleed print.

The studio worked with queer British artist Sofie Birkin, whose free-flowing, colourful illustrations reflect a community fighting for and celebrating its right to be heard. In a first for Royal Mail, the stamps feature a non-heterosexual couple kissing.

NB Studio engaged Pride organisations around the UK to ensure that the symbolism in the design, including flags, tattoos, clothing, and handkerchiefs, was respectful to all identities featured.
