In 2004, the Letterpress Workshop moved from the School of Printing and Publishing to the School of Graphic Design, primarily to serve as a teaching tool for typography. With pathway areas within the School as diverse as Illustration and Moving Image, the workshop has grown to accommodate the varied needs of students. Work has taken on an innovative edge, with students and staff creating process-driven work and taking printed elements from the workshop to re-interpret within their own practice.
The LCP archive comprises a curious and eclectic mix of the college’s own records and documentation, plus a diverse range of objects and ephemera related to print, design and typography that have been bought, collected or donated over many years.
This edition of Monograph brings together the old and the new, setting pieces from the LCP archive alongside complementary work from contemporary students and professional practitioners. It seeks to demonstrate the way in which the boundaries of letterpress are being challenged whilst drawing from the rich print history of the college. The work also features in a forthcoming exhibition at LCC entitled The Changing Face of Letterpress.
