The Greatest Show on Earth: BBC unveils its Rio Olympics trailer

Featuring a gymnastic sloth and a hammer-throwing anteater, RKCR/Y&R’s trailer is an impressive piece of animation with some lovely touches

Animation appears to be the chosen route for these big sporting spectacular trails – Pete Candeland’s film for the 2012 London Olympics turned the country into a giant athletic arena while in Marc Craste’s trail for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics athletes battled the forces of nature.

The natural world is to the fore again for the BBC’s Rio coverage. Various Amazonian animals discover the delights of athletic competition as they soon become adept at gymnastics, synchronised diving and volleyball.

There are some lovely humorous touches from directors Againstallodds (who also made the multi-awarded Spanish lottery Christmas spot Night Shift) as the film steers clear of the bombast that often accompanies such spots. However something that has already drawn critical comments from Brazilians on YouTube is the idea that Brazil = rainforest when the games are being held in Rio. But we are talking about a film that has been made primarily for a UK audience for whom Brazil and the Amazon are very much linked. At least it’s not full of samba dancers!
