The New York Times Magazine’s 25 songs issue

With its letterpress concert poster cover, The New York Times Magazine’s recent issue dedicated to 25 tracks that “tell us where music is going” shows how great type can serve as the glue between print and online.

Sunday’s print edition of the NYTM was given over to a series of essays on 25 songs – each of which, according to the publication, says something about where music is today.

There’s everything from Sun Kil Moon, Wilco and Rihanna, right through to Syd Tha Kid, Run the Jewels and, yes, Lionel Richie, whose 1984 track Hello continues to thrive online thanks to its, er, timeless video.

Jason Sfetko, the NYTM’s deputy art director, looked after the design of the issue which recalls the bold, fluoro letterpress work of the Colby Poster Printing Company.


The issue is also published in an online edition, designed by Linsey Fields and Rodrigo de Benito Sanz, and which includes the text and images alongside a selection of clips of each featured track.

Using several variants of Henrik Kubel’s New Grotesk Round, the type-heavy issue also includes a photo series from artist JR, portraits by Landon Nordeman and Christaan Felber and an illustration of Kendrick Lamar by Jesse Draxler (above).

As a print and online venture which relies on striking type throughout, it’s great-looking and suitably contentious – perfect reading and listening material.
