The TfL Go app is designed to make journeys through London easy, using a live, adaptive version of the iconic London Underground map as the starting point for journey planning. As well as quickly reporting on nearby services and their availability, TfL Go charts trips to specific destinations, suggesting bike or bus-only routes as well as underground, overground, and step-free options.

“We need to keep rethinking how maps can adapt to new technologies and help us make sense of a constantly changing world – how maps can make cities inclusive, understandable and interesting to explore,” says Hanna Kops, head of experience at TfL Digital. There are plenty of slick, responsive design details embedded into the app, with live data designed to alert users to transport disruption without interfering with the map.

The design team was careful to preserve the work of Harry Beck, who designed the original Tube map in 1933, by using algorithms to generate curves at different angles and keep the weight of the map’s lines consistent.

Voice interaction is also available, so blind and partially sighted users can still receive directions or learn about arrival times. TfL Go has been downloaded over 3.7 million times so far, and continues to evolve – for example, in 2022 a new feature suggested free and affordable events in the city.
