Tyler Mitchell’s opulent photographs featured on the cover of M – the magazine supplement belonging to French newspaper Le Monde – for its SS22 womenswear special. The images are continued inside the magazine as part of a spread named Héroïnes Fantasy.

The series features classical references throughout, from painted scenic backdrops and decadent chandeliers to photographs taken in studio corners in the style of Irving Penn.

Mitchell and his team wanted to create imagery that felt beautiful and artful, but also experimental and contemporary, a tension emphasised by Marie Chaix’s styling. “My intention was to push my photographic voice further into new territory while keeping some signatures from my pre-existing work,” Mitchell says.

The contemporary feel of the cover image is enhanced by the graphic design choices, from the flashes of chartreuse to the scattered positioning of the cover line, Au-delà du réel, meaning ‘Beyond reality’.
