Virago Modern Classics 40th Anniversary Collection by Little, Brown Book Group

This project has been selected in the Editorial category in The Annual 2019, CR’s award scheme celebrating the best in commercial creativity

Virago was founded in the 1970s to champion work by women writers. To celebrate its 40th anniversary, the publisher released new editions of 13 texts by leading authors ranging from Zora Neale Hurston to Muriel Spark and Angela Carter.

Virago Art Director Hannah Wood worked with illustrator Yehrin Tong to create a mix of classic and contemporary patterned designs for the books’ covers. “I was passionate about choosing just one artist to collaborate with me on this project, not only as a way of keeping the look consistent but also as a real celebration of the artist’s work,” says Wood.

The collection features an imaginative and varied set of designs which draw on a wide range of references, and is full of rich, subtle details, such as the distinctive green spines – a nod to the Virago Modern Classics titles that historically used the same hue.
