Northern Design Festival

Showcasing creativity and design from across the region and beyond, talks, exhibitions, workshops, and events at the festival this year focus around the theme of Create:Digital, exploring how designers are responding to recent advances in digital technologies, and how this effects the processes of creating work. 35 events are taking place, with highlights including Illustrate, featuring the work of artists from the North of England, with sketchbooks, commissioned projects and installations; Design Event MART, presenting work from northern designers in the fields of print, furniture, textiles, lighting, and more; the Create:Digital exhibition showcasing work made with digital methods such as 3D printing and coding from designers such as Dominic Wilcox, Tom Dixon and Bethan Laura Wood; and talks and workshops from D&AD and Design Means Business amongst others.


Frieze Week 2013

Alongside Frieze Art Fair in Regent’s Park this week (17-20 Oct, www.friezelondon.com) a variety of other art fairs, exhibitions and events are opening across capital, including: Multiplied at Christie’s, which this year includes an exhibition on the transformative potential of print, telling the stories of three non-profit print studios, plus a printmaking workshop (18-21 Oct, www.multipliedartfair.com); Moniker Urban Art Fair shares a venue with unsigned artists’ work at the Other Art Fair at The Old Truman Brewery (17-20 Oct, www.theotherartfair.com, www.monikerartfair.com); Stuart Semple transforms a vast townhouse opposite Regent’s Park, with his interactive, immersive environment Suspended Disbelief (6-21 Oct, www.stuartsemple.com); BRUTAL, from Lazarides and The Vinyl Factory, with offsite installations at 180 The Strand (15-27 Oct, lazinc.com); Moving Image contemporary video art fair returns to The Bargehouse (17-20 Oct www.moving-image.info); expect the unexpected at a carpark near Oxford Street housing mixed media show Big Deal No 5 (18-20 October, www.deal-big.biz); and tactile art is celebrated at the Touch Art Fair at the old BBC Studios (17-20 Oct, www.touchartfair.com).


The Lakes International Comic Art Festival
Kendal, Cumbria

With talks, live drawing events, workshops, films, exhibitions and a family zone, this festival aims to celebrate the very best in comic art from cartoon strips to superhero comics, from manga to non-fiction graphic novels. Highlights include the Big Comic Draw which opens the weekend, with a live drawing session from Doug Braithwaite (X-Men and Storm Dogs), Carlos Ezquerra (Judge Dredd), Duncan Fegredo (Hellboy) and Jose Munoz (Alack Sinner); talks come from Ed Brubaker (Captain America, Criminal and Fatale) and Kurt Busiek (Spider-Man, Marvels and AstroCity) amongst others; British political cartoonist Steve Bell will be in conversation with American comics journalist Joe Sacco; Viz creators Simon Thorp and Graham Dury discuss their work; and The Brewery Arts Centre presents special film programme including American Splendour, Tamara Drewe, 300, V for Vendetta, A History of Violence, and manga films My Neighbour the Yamadas, and Oldboy.

Classic experimental black-and-white photos, self-portraits and fashion and advertising work, can be seen alongside rarely seen socio-political sketches, in this exhibition of early works from the renowned photographer, including collage, drawing and photography.


Italian Poster Biennial

Work from 60 of the most well-known poster artists from around the world will be on show alongside video interviews, talks, workshops and sister exhibition ‘Design Vs Poverty’.


Irvin Penn: On Assignment
Pace/MacGill Gallery, New York

A survey of photographs, magazines and ephemera from the six-decade career of the iconic American photographer, including images for Clinique, The New Yorker, House and Garden, and Vogue, who he shot more than 150 covers for between 1943 and 2004, many of which will be on show.
