WORK: Construct – photographs that highlight the gap between rich and poor in China

This series of photographs by Jonathan Browning aims to highlight the gap between the rich and poor in urban china. Portraits of labourers – typically migrants from rural China – are shot against advertising billboards that surround the construction sites where they work. Their clothing, body language and demeanour seems out of place against the backdrop of the million dollar homes and luxurious lifestyles the ads promote.

“During the lunch hour, the migrant workers often leave the site in search of lunch or for a walk, and I would ask them to stand in front of the board a couple of minutes” explains Browning.
