WORK: Vaughan Oliver’s artwork for Pixies album Head Carrier

Graphic designer Vaughan Oliver has collaborated with Pixies since the 1980s, designing covers for some of the band’s best known albums. His latest artwork for new release Head Carrier was designed in collaboration with artist Ian Pollock and Joshua Price, a University of Greenwich student and intern at Oliver’s Studio.

The design is inspired by lyrics from the album and characters described within them, and combines collage imagery with lettering designed and shot by Price. A limited edition boxset includes an illustrated lyrics book and a poster featuring artwork by Oliver.

Artwork for the record will be on display as part of Where Do Ideas Come From, a graphics exhibition taking place during Northern Design Festival in Newcastle from October 7 to 16. The exhibition will feature work by ten image makers including Lucienne Roberts+, Chrissie MacDonald, Alan Kitching and Angus Hyland, exploring their process and inspiration. See ndesignfest.co.uk for details. Head Carrier is out now on record label Play It Again Sam.
