WORK: Evert_45 website brings Dutch war history into present day

History groups and charities are using increasingly inventive ways to bring stories of the First and Second World Wars alive for contemporary audiences. We’ve see the widely praised We’re Here Because We’re Here artwork, which saw actors in First World War uniforms appear across UK cities and towns to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, and various websites and blogs that attempt to imagine the experience of the wars using contemporary channels.

A new example of the latter was launched last month: Evert_45 is an online project created to coincide with the national liberation celebrations in The Netherlands by Dutch telecom giant KPN, the National Committee Remembrance Day and Liberation Day. It tells the story of 13 year-old Evert and his family during World War II, with Evert sharing everyday events on Instagram, YouTube and online at evert45.com as if they were happening today. The aim of the project is both to draw younger generations into the wartime history, while reminding them not to take their free lives today for granted. Agency: N=5; evert45.com
