WORK: Samaya identity by Farrow

Samaya is a natural skincare brand based on Indian Ayurvedic principles. The company was started by Abida Halstenberg, an entrepreneur who developed an interest in traditional Ayurvedic remedies during her childhood in India.

The name combines two Sanskrit words: sama, ‘balance’ and alaya, ‘place’ to create ‘a place of balance’, says Farrow‘s Gary Stillwell. The brand is “designed to reflect these principles of natural simplicity and balance”.

Farrow created the visual identity and designed the packaging, point of sale materials and website. “Calming colours and minimal typography give the brand elegance while tactile, quality materials give the packaging an air of understated luxury,” the studio says. Italian frosted glass bottles are housed in card tubes, both of which are fully recyclable.

The project represents something of a departure for the studio, which has made its name in work for music, food and drink and homeware. “Beauty is an area that we are naturally drawn to,” Stillwell says. “It fits with our aesthetic and feels like an obvious progression. There are inevitably challenges moving in to any new sector but those are the challenges that any studio should relish.”
