Zeitgeist: Tom Johnson

Tom Johnson is one of the winners of the Zeitgeist awards in CR’s Photography Annual 2018. The awards recognise rising stars of the photography world; artists who have captured the mood and our imaginations this past year

Blurring the lines between documentary and fashion is what Tom Johnson is all about. Alongside shooting fashion editorials for Dazed and Vogue and working with high-end brands such as Hermès and Toogood, his previous projects have documented everything from the people of Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales to Jarek and Darek, two Polish former National Champion hand-balancers, set against the backdrop of the Nevada Desert.

Growing up in a village in the Oxfordshire countryside, Johnson’s first exposure to photography was in his teens when he started going to gigs. “I did art at GCSE but was crap at drawing, so I started just to take lots of pictures,” he says. “I started photographing bands at gigs because I was crap at playing the guitar as well, and then it went on from there really.”
